Quotes on Free Will Stolen From Monergism.com

As I was browsing around Monergism.com, I came across some of the following quotes on the subject of freewill:

"If the natural man has a free will to believe the gospel, then why does he need grace? If his will is naturally free then it would do away with the need for grace altogether...To teach that the natural man has a free will overthrows the gospel ... it is precisely because man is in bondage that he needs Christ to set him free." (John 8:34, 36)
- John Hendryx

If any man doth ascribe of salvation, even the very least, to the free will of man, he knoweth nothing of grace, and he hath not learnt Jesus Christ aright.
- Martin Luther

"...we allow that man has choice and that it is self-determined, so that if he does anything evil, it should be imputed to him and to his own voluntary choosing. We do away with coercion and force, because this contradicts the nature of the will and cannot coexist with it. We deny that choice is free, because through man's innate wickedness it is of necessity driven to what is evil and cannot seek anything but evil. And from this it is possible to deduce what a great difference there is between necessity and coercion. For we do not say that man is dragged unwillingly into sinning, but that because his will is corrupt he is held captive under the yoke of sin and therefore of necessity will in an evil way. For where there is bondage, there is necessity. But it makes a great difference whether the bondage is voluntary or coerced. We locate the necessity to sin precisely in corruption of the will, from which follows that it is self-determined.
John Calvin from Bondage and Liberation of the Will, pg. 69-70

"The fact that no man can choose to live a sinless life is proof positive that he has no free will. He is held captive under the yoke of sin and thus he sins willingly and of necessity ... and he cannot do otherwise."
- John Hendryx

The Screwtape Letters

Recently, my family and I went to my Grandpa's house to help him get ready to move. My Grandpa, being an avid reader, had about nine bookshelves full of books. Because my grandpa had to get rid of a lot of books, I happened to be the recipient of a few books. One of those books was The Screwtape Letters, by C. S. Lewis. I have been reading it this morning and enjoying it very much. The perspective of the book is quite weird and awkward. It is weird to read about God being the enemy, and truth being bad. This book really opens ones eyes to the reality of the spiritual world that many forget about. Here are a few quotes that I liked:

"We want the Church to be small not only that fewer men know the Enemy but also that those who do may acquire the uneasy intensity and the defensive self-righteousness of a secret society or a clique." -- P.34

"How much better for us if all humans died in costly nursing homes amid doctors who lie, nurses who lie, friends who lie, as we have trained them, promising life to the dying, encouraging the belief that sickness excuses every indulgence, and even, if our workers know their job, withholding all suggestion of a priest lest it should betray to the sick man his true condition!" -- P.27

"But whatever the nature of the composite object, you must keep him praying to it--to the thing that he has made, not to the Person who has made him." --P.27

Tracts and menus

Our family went to dinner tonight at a local restaurant lacking just a little friendly service. After deciding what to order, I took Mark Spence's advice and put a trillion dollar bill in my menu. When we finished ordering, our great server put our menus on the table next to us. I waited and wondered if anyone would be seated there, and if they would find my tract. When we were about half way through with our meal, a family of five was seated next to us at the table with the menu containing my tract. I (im)patiently waited for one of them to find it, looking over frequently to see when they would find it. Not long after they were seated, I spotted one of the kids reading the tract. When he finished reading it he passed it on to his brother to read. After the father took a quick look at it they set it in the menu holder in the middle of the table. Who knows, maybe after they left someone else might have found it and read it. I'm planning to practice this fun method of evangelism more in the future. It's amazing how easy it can be to get the good news of the gospel into someones hand.
